Blogging to Learn
I started blogging to keep in touch with my family in New Mexico in June of 2005. About 9 months later, I found a home school blogging community I felt would be safe to have our children blog on. We had one dinosaur eMachines little itty-bitty desktop that ran on dial-up. We went from me blogging occasionally to 4 of us blogging 5-6 days of the week.
Thankfully, we were able to get a laptop in 2007, a year later. Now, Amanda has her own laptop, I have mine that I share when necessary, and we still have Dino, which is pretty much where Jocelyn does her business. The business of blogging has gotten a lot faster, though, since we were able to get on hi-speed and set up a network last year.
Home Schooling ~ Blogging To Learn
This is one of the main reasons we blog. I am so thankful to the LORD that He has given us as a family the opportunity to do this together as a family. It has brought us closer together, it opens up opportunities to research and learn things individually and together, and opens up so many topics and times for deep discussions. It is unbelievable! We have been blessed that our blogging ventures have been used as ministries and encouragement to other home school families and friends.
We have fitted blogging, photo-shopping, graphic art and web design to our homeschooling, and what a blessing! It is fun, educational and knowledge that is applicable in today’s world.
Running blogs and websites, blogging on teams and answering comments and questions about a blog post teach and hone managerial skills as well as conversational and social skill.
A couple of great resources that have added to our learning is Training Daughters, Teaching Wives and States and Countries Exploration. We have been able to use writing assignments as research and writing classes for all of our girls. Eric and I are now working together to implement some of the writing assignments for him to put onto his own blog and the Training Sons To Be Men site. Managing these sites, meeting deadlines, and working with advertisers and other writers has been an added learning experience in blogging and writing. Through this,Yehovah has given us the opportunity to manage Gleaning the Harvest.

I am trying to encourage my youngest dd to write more. Thanks for the ideas!

: ) You are welcome Karen. Blogging for us just kind of took on a form of its own, as you can tell by the different blogs and sites we run. I think this is a great and fun way to encourage writing. I know that setting these parameters also kept the “Can I blog?” “Can I blog??” to a minimum, because they knew when and what and for how long.

Jacque, Thanks for the post. I have been wondering how you do your unschooling and this “peek” inside helped me get a glimpse of your days. I’ve recently changed my way that I am crediting high school English and your post helped me see how to set boundaries with blogging as we just began and I’ve run into a couple snags… with two girls using one laptop and never getting the computer when they need it… *grin*
Question on your web design time… do you just let them play or are there structured activities to learn? I myself would love to learn more, but never have the time… my one daughter would have an interest and I’m considering adding it to her days… do you have a photoshop program you work with? My daughter is artsy and I was wondering if the cost was worth it.
Warmly, ~Melissa
