Math with the 8yo
Posted By Jacque on April 27, 2012
Home school math. I was typing something up, and Isaac noticed something on the clock or something of what I was typing; I can’t remember what started it.
8yo: “Mom, how many minutes are in a day?”
“Well, let’s figure that out.”
So, I asked, and he answered.
How many minutes in an hour?
60min = 1 hourHow many hours in a day?
24 hours = 1 day
Let’s do the math.
60m X 24H = 1440
That math looks like this:
I typed out 24 1′s first, then the 60′s next to them, and he counted them with his 6yo brother.
1 60

“WOW. That’s a lot of minutes Mom!”
So, I figure, why not take advantage of this time to teach him multiplication and addition? Let’s see how much he really understands of this.
It’s like this, sonn..
We have 5 chickens
If we get 2 eggs in one day from 2 of the five chickens, it looks like this:
1 day 2 chickens=2eggs
1 week= 7 days
2eggsX7days=
2+2+2+2+2+2+2 = 1452 weeks in a year
1 week=14eggs
52 weeks = ? eggs?52 weeks X14eggs

X14

He did the math, told me which ones to multiply first, what was the Tens and the Ones places, and we went on to do it a few other ways to let him see it differently mathwise.
52 X 14
=
52 X 4
+
52 X 1052

Just a little of what we did today with the 8yo for math. I love it that he wants to learn because it is REAL LIFE math that he can relate to and cares to learn about. And, after all, HE ASKED ME.
Have a great day!
