Roles and Capabilities of Writers on WP Blogs

Posted By Jacque on December 2, 2009

Did you ever wonder what the difference is between an Admin, Author, Contributor, Subscriber, etc. on the WordPress blogs? Well, being the Admin of several sites, we have different roles and capabilities we want to set for different writers.

I needed to set the roles for the writers so they could get comments and post a draft without publishing it on Gleaning the Harvest. I also needed to set some of the posts so that I posted them, but the persons they are about can also receive the comments. I needed to set them up an account to do that.

Obviously, an Administrator can do anything on a blog dashboard. The other roles on a WP blog are: Editor, Author, Contributor, and Subscriber. A Subscriber can only read and comment. The 3 in the middle are the tricky ones. You might want to give someone a certain amt of power on the Dashboard without giving them control over certain things. This page at WordPress Codex gives all the info – and a little more – that I needed: Roles and Capabilities

Here is what I needed to know:

Editor: can read, publish and delete any posts and pages, moderate comments, receive comments on the post they author, and manage links and categories.

Author: can publish and delete posts, manage their posts, and receive comments on the post they author.

Contributor: can edit and delete their own posts.

Subscriber: can read the published posts and comment.

I also needed to know if Contributors can receive comments on the posts they write, but I didn’t see that listed on there. I suppose I will know when the Contributors do or don’t receive comments! Of course, Amanda or Jocelyn may know.

Learning something new everyday~

    Mrs Dixon, I’m not sure if contributors can do that, but I sent Jocelyn a link to a plugin that allowed you to create “custom” roles with their own capabilities. Here’s the plugin and link:

Hear, O Yisra’ĕl: יהוה our Elohim, יהוה is one!
and you are to love YHVH your Elohim with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your understanding, and with all your strength.'
{Deuteronomy 6:4-9, Mark 12:28-30}

Welcome

Hello friends and welcome! The coffee is fresh, the tea is hot, so pull up a comfy chair and sit with me for a bit.

Who am I? Nobody special; just a flawed wife and mom, daughter, sister, and friend chosen by YHVH to follow and tell about him.

Jacque Mrs. Jacque Dixon and her husband, Matt, train their nine children up in YHVH's narrow way, home schooling on their small homestead in Indiana. She is co-owner and Manager of Gleaning the Harvest, a mission founded by the Dixons, presenting widowed/single mother home school families to YHVH's people. She is also owner and publisher of Training Sons to Be Men, and Training Daughters, Teaching Wives. Walking Therein is where Jacque writes encouraging home school articles, articles of faith, and the daily lives of the Dixon family.
