Kitchen Math Lessons

Posted By Jacque on November 10, 2009

Hannah asked me last week on Wednesday if she could please make me some brownies. My first answer was that I wasn’t sure, and she said she would really like to, and she would clean up the kitchen so she could do that. She is only 9, and she was so happy to come up with the idea, so how could I resist!?

She went downstairs, worked hard to clean it all up and started making the brownie batch. A little while later, though, she came up to me with the bowl of the brownie batch, and such a sad, disappointed look on her face. I asked her what was wrong. She told me that she had added in two cups of flour instead of 2/3 of a cup. She was so dismayed and disappointed when she realized what she did….

Here she had cleaned the whole kitchen so she could make them, and they weren’t even going to turn out.
I told her to go downstairs, write down all the ingredients and their measurements and we would work out how much she has over-added the flour. What she had done was to triple the recipe of flour.

We sat and looked at the amount of flour she used, compared to how much she needed. (Boy, was I glad it came out so even!) We then went through and tripled the other amounts and figured out how much more of each ingredient she needed to add.

Ugh! Not that I didn’t want three times the amount of brownies, but that meant 1 1/2c. of cocoa!!

What a blessing to be able to take the time to show her this. Oh, how it made my heart happy to see how relieved she was that she could finish making her brownies! It is a joy to be here to help my daughter, to walk with her in the good and the bad, to hold her hand and lift her heart as I teach her something so simple as math.

I am so blessed by these small things. I am so blessed that truly everything is a Living Learning Moment in our home!!

blessings~

That’s so sweet! Poor girl, thinking she’d ruined the whole thing!
My family has screwed up brownies so many times that it’s quite hilarious. We still poke fun at my brother-in-law for trying to wing it on the recipe once, wow that was gross…
I’m glad this one was fixable. It always makes me sad when little ones are disappointed like that.

Welcome

Hello friends and welcome! The coffee is fresh, the tea is hot, so pull up a comfy chair and sit with me for a bit.

Who am I? Nobody special; just a flawed wife and mom, daughter, sister, and friend chosen by Yahveh to follow and tell about him.

Jacque Mrs. Jacque Dixon and her husband, Matt, train their nine children up in Yahveh's narrow way, home schooling on their small homestead in Indiana. She is co-owner and Manager of Gleaning the Harvest, a mission founded by the Dixons, presenting widowed/single mother home school families to Yahweh's people. She is also owner and publisher of Training Sons to Be Men, and Training Daughters, Teaching Wives. Walking Therein is where Jacque writes encouraging home school articles, articles of faith, and the daily lives of the Dixon family.
