Yehoshua and the Sh’ma
Posted By Jacque on October 31, 2009
The daily reciting of the Sh’ma is a commandment in Deuteronomy 6
1 “Now this is the mitzvah, the laws and rulings which ADONAI your God ordered me to teach you for you to obey in the land you are crossing over to possess, 2 so that you will fear ADONAI your God and observe all his regulations and mitzvot that I am giving you – you, your child and your grandchild – as long as you live, and so that you will have long life. 3 Therefore listen, Isra’el, and take care to obey, so that things will go well with you, and so that you will increase greatly, as ADONAI, the God of your ancestors, promised you by giving you a land flowing with milk and honey.
4 “Sh’ma, Yisra’el! ADONAI Eloheinu, ADONAI echad [Hear, Isra'el! ADONAI our God, ADONAI is one]; 5 and you are to love ADONAI your God with all your heart, all your being and all your resources. 6 These words, which I am ordering you today, are to be on your heart; 7 and you are to teach them carefully to your children. You are to talk about them when you sit at home, when you are traveling on the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them on your hand as a sign, put them at the front of a headband around your forehead, 9 and write them on the door-frames of your house and on your gates.
This is a commandment, and because Yehoshua followed all of the commandments, he also followed this one. He said the Sh’ma is the most important commandment. Read what he said.
Mark 12:28-34
28 One of the Torah-teachers came up and heard them engaged in this discussion. Seeing that Yeshua answered them well, he asked him, “Which is the most important mitzvah of them all?” 29 Yeshua answered, “The most important is, `Sh’ma Yisra’el, ADONAI Eloheinu, ADONAI echad [Hear, O Isra'el, the LORD our God, the LORD is one], 30 and you are to love ADONAI your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your understanding and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: `You are to love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other mitzvah greater than these.” 32 The Torah-teacher said to him, “Well said, Rabbi; you speak the truth when you say that he is one, and that there is no other besides him; 33 and that loving him with all one’s heart, understanding and strength, and loving one’s neighbor as oneself, mean more than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34 When Yeshua saw that he responded sensibly, he said to him, “You are not far from the Kingdom of God.” And after that, no one dared put to him another sh’eilah.
We have so enjoyed saying the Sh’ma with our Littles each night. It is so easy for them to remember and recite. It is so foundational, and even Yehoshua said it is the most important.
This is just another example of something we are learning as we are studying the Scriptures daily. I love it that Yehoshua said this in the New Testament! Honestly, I didn’t know it was the Sh’ma. It is not the Sh’ma in the KJV, which is what we used to read. However, this is just another example of how Yehoshua walks in Torah all throughout his earthly life. It will be a BLESSING of proportions we cannot even fathom when he returns and establishes Torah and Shabbat on this earth again. Oh this makes me want to shout right now!!
And I will end there… praising Yehovah and what he has planned for those who walk in his narrow path. How blessed we are!!
blessings,

I love the way the CJB brings out the relationship between faith and actions that the Sh’ma contains. ‘With all your heart, all your being and all your resources’ is such a clear piece of instruction from our Heavenly Father, and it really brings home the message that faith is not just a badge to wear, it is your life. If you love Yehovah, then dedicating ALL areas of your life to him naturally follows on from that! I have recently re-discovered the joys of tithing, and it really is enriching my walk in faith.

“and you are to love ADONAI your God with all your heart, all your being and all your resources.”
I love the way it says this in this version … “all your resources” … I love that!
