Here is previous post I wrote on The HSBA Post. Enjoy!
Whether you live on a homestead or in a small apartment, there are many homestead lessons that you can teach your children during the school year. We have lived on our 2 1/2 acres for nine years now, but we have only been doing “homestead-y” things for about five years. Honestly, I just never thought about it. I didn’t think we had time.
Once we rearranged our schedules, and I decided we were homeschooling at home, instead of wherever, I found we not only had time, but we were thrilled to be able to get to quilting, gardening and baking.
The greatest thing I have loved about being a homesteading family is all of the hands-on learning our children have experienced. You don’t have to have a great big barn with 50 chickens and a dozen goats or horses. You don’t have to drink raw goat’s milk to be a good homesteader (though it is really good for you!). You really can do what many consider homestead-y projects anywhere. Here is a list of things we do around our homestead, and a list of resources you can try follows!! Happy homeschooling this year!
Some of the “homestead-y” things we have put our hands to:
- quilting: we decided we wanted to, we bought the material and other supplies and thought out some patterns.
- crocheting: our children wanted to learn, so they looked it up online and are still crocheting and learning
- knitting: same thing. They looked it up online and asked Grandma Starr. They are now purchasing their own needles and yarn and making plans for the creations they are going to be making!
- tilling, planting and caring for a large garden: you don’t have to go large. A few planters, some dirt and seeds, and you are all set.
- canning the harvest of our garden: This was a blast! You do not have to have a garden. You can buy veggies and can those too!
- homemade applesauce: this one is easy
- hand sewing projects
- sewing projects on the machine
- baking our own breads
- growing our own herbs
- making teas out of herbs
- raising and breeding goats
- milking the goats
- making goat’s milk soap
- building stalls for our animals
- horses
- raising chickens from chicks
- mixing our own feed for our animals
- we added on to our home: which isn’t necessarily a homesteady thing, but, and our children have learned to hang drywall and siding, and numerous other things.
- meal planning: also not just a homesteading thing, but important to learn, easy to teach and a great necessity.
- grocery shopping: same for this one
Some Homesteading – Home Economics Resources:
These DVDs are some of our very favorites! Our children like to watch them just to watch them and have already referred to them several times in the short time we have had them. The tips and recipes on the Bread-Making dvd have already been put into practice in the Dixon home!
Not only that, but the West ladies are delightful! You feel like you are sitting right there with them in their kitchen,
baking bread, dipping candles and cutting soap with them. You will thoroughly enjoy these dvds and learn from them as well!
