LucyLillie’s Mosquito Bite
Posted By Jacque on June 28, 2008
I asked for a prayer request yesterday for LucyLillie’s eye. We had gone into town, nonetheless, so we would get away from the mosquito village out here and take a nice little walk. The kids have been cooped-up since it IS mosquito village, and I wanted to just let them walk and have a good time. Not.
It seems that just because they spray hazardous, cancer-causing chemicals to kill mosquitoes on a regular basis does not mean that you will be mosquito-free. As we walked, it became apparent that we would not escape the blood-suckers in town either. We had to rush and shoo as we walked near areas with long grass or water sitting. Oh well.
We tried to watch the Littles for mosquitoes, and thought we did a good job until we arrived back at the van. Rachel kept a good eye on her, but, it was Lucy’s eyes we needed to be watching. This is what we saw when we got to the van:
She had a mosquito bite ON HER EYELID! I really could not believe it. Really. I mean, not her brow, but her lid. And, it was already swollen. I naturally figured that the swelling would go down in 24 hours, because that is how long the bite-welts take to go down on Caleb. So, I determined to not freak out too much, regardless of what she looked like. That night, I gave her a teensy bit of antihistamine and took some myself, since she is still nursing. I gave her the recommended amount of ibuprofen, hoping it would help with the swelling.
The next day, everyone kept asking me if she was rubbing it. She really wasn’t too much. Amanda kept asking me if I was worried about her eye. “No. It will take at least 24 hours, and then we will go from there,” I told her a couple of times. Of course, that doesn’t account for Caleb the Inquisitive checking her eyelid to see if 1.) he can open it, and 2.) if it is still swollen.
Then, I saw this:
I thought it was swollen when her eye was half-shut. Apparently not. I rubbed her down with Goot, under her arms, on her lymph nodes and neck and by her ears. I mean, what do you put on a swollen eye? The girls had already used ice. As far as a salve, we didn’t have anything. I know garlic is a natural antibiotic, so I used the Goot.
I had been talking to a friend on IM earlier, and she asked a question about an eye infection, and I told her to put breast milk in it. That is what I always do when one of our children have anything in their eyes. I do it from as early as necessary to as old as they will let me. Breast milk is full of white blood cells and works great on eyes, but I had forgotten that with the mosquito bite!
So, I started putting breast milk in her eye. We were only at the 18 hour mark, so I knew it would be swollen and still tried not to worry. It’s just hard sometimes not to, isn’t it? Especially when things seem to get worse, instead of better. The next thing that happened was that her lower lid became swollen too. sigh.
Sorry the picture is blurry. She was in good spirits for the most part, but was not into having her picture taken. You can see how pink and swollen her lower lid became though. I started to think that I had asked my Mom and sister to pray, but I had not called everyone in to pray for Lucy together. Why? I don’t know. But, when I thought about it, I did so immediately.
I had all the kids come in and lay their hands on her, and we prayed.
James 5
13 Is someone among you in trouble? He should pray. Is someone feeling good? He should sing songs of praise. 14 Is someone among you ill? He should call for the elders of the congregation. They will pray for him and rub olive oil on him in the name of the Lord. 15 The prayer offered with trust will heal the one who is ill – the Lord will restore his health;openly acknowledge your sins to one another, and pray for each other, so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Therefore, 17 Eliyahu was only a human being like us; yet he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and no rain fell on the Land for three years and six months. 18 Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the Land produced its crops. 19 My brothers, if one of you wanders from the truth, and someone causes him to return, 20 you should know that whoever turns a sinner from his wandering path will save him from death and cover many sins.
Her eye got so bad that it was completely swollen shut. As a matter of fact, when she was sleeping, her top eyelid was swollen and overlapping the lower lid when her eye was closed. And, it got worse, of course, when she slept. I couldn’t keep her awake, though, of course. I was worried that she might get an eye infection if the swelling didn’t go down. It is a scary thought that you might do something wrong or not do something necessary that might cause one of your children to lose their eyesight for the rest of their life.
I called Matt to let him know how she was doing, and we decided we would take her in to have her looked at if the swelling had not gone down when he got home from work. It would be around 9pm, so that would be past the 24Hour mark. I knew, though, that as swollen as her eye was, it was going to go down. I just knew it would.
When Matt got home, I noticed it had gone down some. At least it wasn’t overlapping the lower lid now. An hour later, I asked him if it looked like it had gone down since he came home, and he thought it had. Her eye was only opening a small slit, but we knew it was opening. And, as the night wore on, her eye opened a little more. I kept putting breast milk into her eye, and it kept improving.
Whew. What a relief. I thanked God. I had promised myself that I would give God the glory. When I put the breast milk in her eyes, I thought to myself, well, am I going to just give credit to themilk if the swelling goes down? Or am I going to give God the glory? I gave God the glory, because, even if it was through the milk, He gave me the thought and the knowledge and the milk, and I trust Him and His timing, so it is due to Him. Praise the Lord!
I have been so blessed to hear all day, “Oh, I am so glad your eye is better, Loolie!” And it is. It looks so much better. Praise God she didn’t get an infection.
It is still a bit swollen, and her lower lid is too, but it is going down.
Poor Little Sweetie. We have been so feeling her pain for the past two days. I am so glad she is getting back to normal. With wisdom from Yehovah, all it took was time, patience and prayer. With all of these, there is no way you can go wrong.
Love you Loolie!!

Our youngest, Benjamin, swells up just like that. He’s allergic to the nasty little bites! He would swell up like a balloon and look like he had welts all over him. Our doctor said to give benedryl and watch for an infection other than that there’s nothing you can do.
You should see him with poison ivy..OIY! When it hits his face we know we’re done for…it’s time to go to the doctor. It goes over his eyelids, up his nose, in his throat..it’s just awful.
Glad to know that she’s doing better!
Much love,
Beth

Oh man… yes, we have had bouts of the dreaded poison ivy too!! As a matter of fact, Matt got it a few days before we went on vacation! And, when we got to GA, Dawn’s son had it on his face. Poor kid. She had to take him in and get him a shot too!

Eric just turned 11, and he stayed away from his Dad and Dawn’s son like the plague! He has vowed not to get PI this summer! We’ll see how that works out, since they have a jungle to mow now!
Thanks for visiting again!

Dear Mrs. Dixon,
Poor Luli! I’m so glad to hear that she is doing better. Her little faces are very cute, yet pitiful. She’s such a sweet little lady. I had a mosquito bite on my left eyelid when I was about four, so I think I can relate to a bit of how she felt. I did get a chuckle out of the way you said, “but, it was Lucy’s eyes we needed to be watching.”

I started searching to find out what may be behind the swelling on my son Ole’s lower left eyelid. He is 20 months and napping and it came on this morning. And now it’s encompassing is upper lid too. My initial reaction was that it was a mosquito bite here in MN. The Lord confirmed this through finding your site. Thank you for taking the time to document this Dixon mama! You have helped another mom thank the Lord and give the glory to our Creator and healer. Amen!

Ever heard of Mosquito repellent? It works wonders.

I sure have Richard. Ever heard of DEET? It is in mosquito repellent and poisons you.
And maybe you didn’t realize that the bite was on her eyelid. I am pretty sure that even the dangerous, chemical-laden repellents have a warning to not get it near or into the eyes.
Thanks for the visit.

Hi!
I had an exact same reaction to a mosquito bite on the eye lid, and I found out it is an allergic reaction. Why didn’t you go to the doctor?

Hi Katrine~
There are a few reasons we didn’t go to the Dr. Many times, with children, we have found that diagnosis is a guessing game. Having already raised 7 two-year-olds before this one, I knew what to look for and was very cautious.
Another reason is that, when my 9yo daughter was around 18m, I took her to a dermatologist, because she had skin issues on her scalp. The prescription he gave me was a topical steroid that could cause brain or nerve damage, and I was to apply it right to her little scalp. Enough said.
One thing I have noticed and remember is that small children heal rather quickly on their own. Many times, one of the littlest ones will have a cut or a bruise, and by that evening it is gone, even though it would take an older child a couple of days to heal.
Small children, in our home, not sure if it the same with most children, but, in our home, mosquito bites DO swell moreso on a little one. I am not sure that it is an allergic reaction. I think it is just their bodies way of receiving these bites at a young age. As we grow older, our body and immune system handles these things better. When talking about young children though, it is better to allow their immune system to develop normally than to medicate them and inhibit their immune system from developing on its own.
In America, at least, we overmedicate everyone, but especially our children.
We believe in a more natural way of attending to illness in our home.
Thank you for your comment~

Oh Dear!!! This happened to my son like two days ago
it started off like a regular bite but he is allergic to them and I know it is going to get just like your little girls own
its so heart breaking!!! Something just made me thought about breast milk (he is strictly breast fed) and I googled it and this came up… I am definitely going to try this! If it helped me with my stye I am sure it’ll work with his bite!

We learned a long time ago about the breast milk, and my midwife, then, at our first home birth, almost 6 years ago, just had me use that, because we did not put the “normal” stuff in they put into newborns’ eyes.
We have recently been using raw goats’ milk in the eyes of our kittens when they are yucky, and that works too.
I would say that any raw milk would be worth trying.
Happy breastfeeding!

HI I am so glad that I found your site on saturday night/early sunday my 3 year old daughters eye was almost swollen shut I was so freaked out ! I took her to the urgent care near the house and he said that he wasn’t sure what it was and gave her an antibotics just in case it had been infected. Poor little angel she was miserable and made it more irritaded from all the crying and fusing. This morning she woke up and its still swollen and after finding your sight I belive that it is just a mosquito bite and she will be fine in a couple of days thank you for posting your pictures it has helped me alot !
God Bless your family

Thanks for the post- we are having the same experience with my 2 1/2 year old daughter. She woke up very upset this morning as her eye is now completely swollen shut. I believe the bite occurred Monday night, so hopefully this is the peak. I’ve thought about taking her in to the doctor, but as you pointed out it’s really just a guessing game. My concern is ophthalmic, and I doubt a regular ped could tell me if her eye is being damaged by the pressure. I may still bring her to an ophthalmologist, who knows. I also had a similar experience with my son (first born) when he was maybe 6-8 months old. His pediatrician prescribed Elidel for his eczema. I applied it maybe once and decided I just couldn’t do it anymore. A few months later, it was all over the news that Elidel was receiving a black label due to some sort of serious possible side effect. We eventually eradicated his eczema through allergy avoidance, which his doctor never suggested.

Hi Bree~
I use breastmilk in the eyes whenever there is a problem. We do not put the eye salve in the eyes at birth, either. Instead, I use breastmilk, and I never have a problem.
If it were me, I would put it in.
Do you know if it is a mosquito bite?

My 2 1/2 year old daughter has 2 mosquito bites right beside her left eye and one on the right. The left eye is swollen as bad as if not worse than LuciLillie’s. I am nursing another baby and can try the breast milk but have a couple of questions. Do I actually put the milk “in” her eye or on the bite. If it’s in the eye that will help to avoid infection, but what about the mosquito bite swelling? Should I use children’s Benedryl to help with the swelling?

Alyssa~ We applied the breastmilk directly into her eye so it could spread in that area. We were more concerned about her eye than the bite, so we did tha tfor that reason. We actually use breastmilk in the eyes whenever there is anything wrong with our babies’ eyes. It is full of white blood cells that help in healing. We do not put any of the ointment into eyes at birth, but rather, use the breastmilk if necessary.
Children’s Benadryl will help with swelling. Give that if you prefer to. At that time, we did not use virgin coconut oil, but, we do apply VCO to almost everything now. I opt for that before giving any OTC or Rx medications. You can read about its benefits here: http://jacquedixon.com/?p=3033
Two of its benefits are:
*reduces fever when massaged onto skin
*relieves itching and prevents infection from bug bites
We use Tropical Traditions brand, and it is the “virgin” coconut oil, not just coconut oil or even just organic coconut oil.
You can check that out here: http://www.tropicaltraditions.com
May you have healing in your home and be blessed~

I am so glad I saw your post & photos. My 2 yr old daughter’s eye started swelling last night. We figured it was a mosquito bite, but never would have guessed her eye would be COMPLETELY swelled shut tonight. We were getting worried, but feel better now. The weird thing is, is that there is no evidence of a bite. the skin texture is the same across the entire upper lid. I just gave her some benadryl. Hopefully it will be better in the morning!!! It makes us so sad to see her like this

I’m glad you found it. It IS worrisome! That’s how I felt the worse it got. I didn’t find evidence of a bite either, just a swollen pink welt, but that’s how it was on my son when he was younger too, no matter where the bite was.
I hope it is getting better for you by now!
