Psalm 119: It Is About Me
Posted By Jacque on November 29, 2008
Around our house for the past few days, all we have heard is the Hebrew Aleph Bet song. Yes, we are homeschoolers….
A sister in the LORD, whom I just got to meet a couple of weeks ago, and whom the LORD has brought into my life for such a time as this, encouraged me the other day, telling me to read Psalm 119.
We, as a family, have struggled for over a year with some issues with other Believers. It can be so very hard sometimes to not just scream at the world and let them know the truth about people. Then, God steps in and the WORD jumps up into your spirit, and you just shut your mouth and pray. And you remember that you really don’t want people to see your ugly side either.
So, the children and I read Psalm 119 out loud the other day. We read Aleph. We were surprised to see the Hebrew letters in this Psalm. I wondered why. They aren’t all there, I don’t think, and we wondered why they were there at all.
Anyway, we are memorizing Psalm 119 in parts.
Aleph goes like this:
1Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD.
2Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart.
3They also do no iniquity: they walk in his ways.
4Thou hast commanded us to keep thy precepts diligently.
5O that my ways were directed to keep thy statutes!
6Then shall I not be ashamed, when I have respect unto all thy commandments.
7I will praise thee with uprightness of heart, when I shall have learned thy righteous judgments.
8I will keep thy statutes: O forsake me not utterly.
See, what others do to me is not about them. It is about me. How I react and how I live, in forgiveness or bitterness, is up to me. If I am going to be undefiled in the way and walk in the law of the LORD, I must guard my heart and my mouth and my thoughts. I must lead the way in front of the children the LORD has given me to be loving and kind about someone who has wronged us.
If we want to be blessed and not cursed, we need to keep His testimonies and seek Him with a whole heart. Opening ourselves up to hatred and anger and foolish talking about someone who has hurt us is not walking outside of the iniquity that the Psalmist is talking about here. It is walking in iniquity. Let’s face it: we are going to hurt and be hurt. It is the nature of this sinful world. Not one person in the WORD is perfect, except for the Son of God, Jesus the Christ. Most of the writers of the Bible wrote with the humanity that we can identify with.
They were given God’s laws to follow, and many times do so, but many times they do not, and they pay for their sins as the law says they will. The difference between their actions and that of an unbeliever is that they do come back to God. They repent of their sins and see His ways and walk in them. They write from the heart and tell us God’s laws and admonish us to follow. Follow and be blessed. Walk therein and do not be ashamed.
Is it a matter of the will? Perhaps a little, but only the will to submit to God’s WORD.
Verse 8 I will keep thy statutes: O forsake me not utterly.
Oh LORD, forsake me not utterly. Keep thy statutes… a matter of the will…. I will…
And, if you want to see what we have been singing lately,
this is not much of a praise song, but it has been music to my ears – wonderful fun and learning the language of God’s people. I desire to learn this language so we can understand the richness of the culture and the true meaning of the language translations.
We really like this first video. It is interactive and catchy.
This one is from the creators of the Hebrew resources I reviewed for TOS, and not exactly our style, but it is another way to learn it and goes with the book and workbook I have for us to learn Hebrew. I did love this method too.
I have the Hebrew Language videos saved on my Youtube channel, if you are interested.
We also watched some of the songs from The Prince of Egypt sung in Hebrew. One of them has the Hebrew and English translations for the end song that is sung in Hebrew in the English version. What a delight on Thanksgiving, after praising the LORD and eating a delicious meal together, to watch this video and read these words of praise in Hebrew to the One True God. I am excited to learn Hebrew, and excited our children want to learn it too!
I am Thankful to the LORD for His WORD. I am thankful for the insight He has given to us to learn about Him and His People and the relationship He really desires from us. With Him and with each other.

Jacque, I am so touched by your beautiful insights into these verses! I have started to memorize them as they are a BIG source of comfort to focus on during this trying time in my life!
May God continue to bless you and keep you as you seek Him first with your WHOLE heart.
And I am very grateful for you starting this meme! Such a wonderful way to focus on the Lord and His Word before the Lord’s Day! (Not to mention as we share with others it gets it in deep into our own spirits as we digest it to be able to express it!)
Blessings and HUGS, dear friend!

Thank you so much for sharing this. I found that this applied to my current situation that I am going through. My ex husband was terribly angry at me recently for something that wasn’t my fault and he spewed terrible insults at me in front of my kids. I have to work hard at not holding a grudge, being angry at him, but instead to be kind to him still and show him the love of God through me. It’s quite a challenge but I know God is watching how we deal with these situations. Hang in there! You’re not alone.

Jacque,
Thanks, this was just what the Dr. ordered. I did not add much to mine, just told everyone to hop on over to yours, I needed it so much and just could not think of anything else to say. I love my little sheltered world here at home, and just hate to leave it for any amount of time, especially to see my family. I do get confirmation each time I do visit them that my husband and I are doing the right thing by keeping our kids home, my 11 yo niece was taken to the movie Twighight and is now reading the book. It broke my heart. I will admit that my kids are allowed to watch things they should not, but each chance I get, I try to counter act what is going in with some godly character and the Word, trusting that God’s word will not return void. I am now a not so frustrated homeschool mom.

I know this is a late comment, but when I read what you said about, what other people do to you it’s not about them, it’s about how you react really is so true, and I had never thought about that before, it’s like when Job was tormented and tested by the devil, it wasn’t about the people who stole his livestock or his friends and wife who tried to sway him they were just pawns it was about his reaction! Thank you for posting that. I love the last viedo you posted that song is just so beautiful the words really are encouraging, it was nice to see what they were saying on the part’s that actually were sung in Hebrew.
love ya!
