Carnival Of Homeschooling #126: End of the School Year? Or Is It?

Posted By Jacque on May 27, 2008

This week is the end of the 2007-2008 school year for many families across the country. June is a few days off and will be the start of summer vacation.

We have not had a ’summer vacation’ in six years. Oh, we have plenty of fun and plenty of vacationing at home during the summer, but we don’t officially take time off from school. School is life, and those Living Learning Moments include reading, textbooks, extra-curricular activities, and anything you can think of.

So, the official school year is over, but, is it? Is it the end of the homeschool year or not?

Finishing Up?

Homeschool Bookshelves

Renae looks at a feeling common to many homeschool moms at the end of the school year as she presents Failing Fourth Grade posted at Life Nurturing Education.

HowToMe presents a two week project that the kids can be involved in and invites us to come and enjoy it with them. How to Put on a “Princess/Royal Picnic” Party posted at HowToMe.

Michelle Waters presents Wrapping Things Up posted at Living Waters.

Year-Round Homeschooling

Summer Reading List

Susan Gaissert shows that the questions and the learning never end! She presents Popcorn and Milk posted at The Expanding Life.

Learning New Subjects

Is there a subject you didn’t get to this year? Or one that isn’t the usual reading, writing or ‘rithmetic?

Sisterlisa is not only a signer for the deaf, but she teaches her children Sign language. She believes it’s very important to remember to teach them the culture in which the deaf live in, especially as Christians. Their lives are not the same as hearing people and they have different etiquette to follow than hearing people do. She it is very important to bridge the gap between the deaf and the hearing communities. She is doing this by teaching Deaf History Trough Their Own Eyes.

Well, it’s officially over…

Miss Jocelyn presents Congratulations Eyebright! posted at A Pondering Heart.

Elena LaVictoire presents Our Homeschool/High School Dance posted at My Domestic Church.

Homeschooling Littles on the Porch

Hannah presents Visiting the Past posted at The Purloined Letter. Join her for a colonial photo essay about their Journey to the Past!

Activities Coordinator presents Yankee Doodle posted at Life On The Planet. What’s that song again??

Always thinking about it

Sunniemom presents The Problem with Traditional Textbooks posted at A Woman On Purpose. Expert, parents and teachers place a lot of credence in the validity and accuracy of textbooks, but are these expectation warranted?

Mother Hen presents Homeschooling on the Cheap – Part 2 posted at Mother Hen. Have you fallen into the trap of over-indulging your children? If you answer yes, you either need to read this or won’t want to!

Looking forward to homeschooling next year

Denise presents Math Facts Are Like Learning To Type posted at Let’s Play Math!. One of the most common math questions on homeschooling discussion forums is, “How can I help my child master the math facts?” Unfortunately, when it comes to drilling facts, many children think math is spelled “B-O-R-I-N-G.”…

Kim presents Of Automatons and Homeschooling posted at Kim’s Play Place. This certainly explains why she likes Junie B. Jones for her kids.

1 Language presents The Advantages of Learning with Phonics posted at English. Even if you know some of the basics of English, you might find it helpful to review some materials on phonics.

And, of course, the Homeschool/Education Controversy…

Caleb’s Feet Henry wonders, Is it time to hoist the Skull and cross bones? at Why Homeschool.

Abrianna presents It’s Not About Homeschooling posted at Yankee CowGirl. There were some homeschoolers who were concerned that part of the reason for the FLDS raid was because they homeschooled. Others said homeschoolers should not be fearful since that was not the reason for the raid. In my post, I show why the argument that It’s Not About Homeschooling is incorrect.

Adso rants about the horrible treatment given to a five-year-old whose kindergarten teacher voted him out of class. Here’s hoping he homeschools. Adso of Melk presents VERY Bad Socialization posted at Lorem Ipsum. You can read MY opinion on the matter too: Prayers For Alex Who Was “Voted Off the Kindergarten Island”

Thanks Renae. Funny how it is such a big decision when we make changes to our blogs! It was a big decision to move, and I wasn’t sure about changing the title, but I do like it. And, I even took it from the same verse as Seeking Rest was. So, I am happy about that!

You are welcome Jocelyn, my dear daughter!

Hear, O Yisra’ĕl: יהוה our Elohim, יהוה is one!
and you are to love YHVH your Elohim with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your understanding, and with all your strength.'
{Deuteronomy 6:4-9, Mark 12:28-30}

Welcome

Hello friends and welcome! The coffee is fresh, the tea is hot, so pull up a comfy chair and sit with me for a bit.

Who am I? Nobody special; just a flawed wife and mom, daughter, sister, and friend chosen by YHVH to follow and tell about him.

Jacque Mrs. Jacque Dixon and her husband, Matt, train their nine children up in YHVH's narrow way, home schooling on their small homestead in Indiana. She is co-owner and Manager of Gleaning the Harvest, a mission founded by the Dixons, presenting widowed/single mother home school families to YHVH's people. She is also owner and publisher of Training Sons to Be Men, and Training Daughters, Teaching Wives. Walking Therein is where Jacque writes encouraging home school articles, articles of faith, and the daily lives of the Dixon family.
