More on FIREPROOF: the Movie

[WARNING spoilers]

I wish I had a transcript so I could remember all of a few particular scenes that I really liked in FIREPROOF the Movie. I have been remembering different scenes all day. There is one point at which Caleb’s dad (Kirk Cameron is Caleb) asks what makes him feel dishonoured by his wife. As Caleb goes on and on and on, he begins to realize who he is to God. It is amazing, and it is like seeing the light bulb go on. Or, you know, the point at which you are telling one of your children what they did, and why it was wrong, and you feel this little voice inside saying, “Yup, un-huh, this lesson is for YOU!”.

Anyway, I wish I had the DVD right now. I would pop it into my laptop and watch it a few times more. I don’t, obviously, so I found a few other things to watch.

One thing that was so interesting to me is something I found out today – another awesome thing that really backs up FIREPROOF as a real marriage-honouring movie. In the theater, at the end I thought how much better it would have been if his wife had played his wife, since she *is* an actress!! And, I thought about that final scene – the kiss, and how it was not honouring to his real-life wife to kiss his co-star, Erin Bethea, and thought what a shame he had to kiss her, when the movie was about honouring your spouse. I wondered how she felt. (my mind was going, huh? ) In the last scene, I thought it would have been so easy to sneak Chelsea in there as his on-screen wife to play in that scene, since they were similar, and then I wondered if his real-life wife, Chelsea, was his wife in the final fire station scene. I mean, isn’t that what this whole movie was about? Honouring marriage ALWAYS, in all things?

The interview on Today was very good. I was SO HAPPY to hear Kirk Cameron himself say that he does not kiss anyone BUT his wife, even in movies! I was surprised when he said it WAS his wife, Chelsea, in that scene, since it really was on my heart as I watched it. I was SO even MORE excited about the movie! He tells that it was Chelsea, and explains why. He also tells how almost the entire set and all those who made FIREPROOF were volunteers! I was thrilled to learn a lot more about the making of the movie and that he did it, donating all the money he got from the film. It made me believe even more that we HAVE to support this movie!!

See the interview on Today: FamilyLife Culture Watch: A FIREPROOF Marriage! I did not get into the “movie standards” in my first post, because I loved the movie, in spite of the fact that it was not a typical Holloywood-style movie. I like what Scott Williams said on FamilyLife Culture Watch:

As a polished movie, Fireproof is probably a 6 or 7. As a message, it’s a 10. But it seems in these days of uncertainty about marriage, most people would be willing to give up a bit of entertainment quality for a strong dose of encouragement.

I think this is just what I was feeling, but could not have said it better myself! The message was good. Much of the acting and the scenes were good too. I would not have given it a 6-7 though. I would have given it a 7-8 at least. I am impressed with the fact that many of those who acted or produced the movie were volunteers. Go to FamilyLife Culture Watch and watch the Today Show interview for yourself!

Kirk Cameron on The View – 5/28/08

Interview with the cast of Fireproof: Kirk Cameron, Erin Bethea and others:

I received a comment about the great resources for marriage associated with this movie that I want to share with you. There is The Love Dare book and a Couple’s Kit, which has a bible study couples can do together or with a small group. It comes with DVD clips from the movie. You can find these resources online at www.fireproofoutreach.com. In the one interview, Kirk Cameron mentions that the book, The Love Dare, which had not even yet been released and sold over 500,000 copies. That is the impact this movie has already had!

I love it that it is not just the theme of marriage, but the the importance of Salvation in Jesus Christ is included, because that is where we find the true meaning of love. I cannot encourage you to see this movie enough, even if you have a most-excellent marriage!

blessings!

  3. Thank You for posting this.
I am wondering if we should take the boys (16 & 15) or just go as a couple.
We saw `Facing the Giants` and `The Passion of The Christ`
And we definitely want to support this movie.
Thanks for letting us know that was his wife in those scenes.
    Blessings,

  4. First, congrats about your Mom moving!!! Yeah!

Re: Fireproof: My Matt said a similar thing about his Chelsea not playing his wife in the movie! Aw, that must mean he’d never act without me if he were a rich and famous actor! All of our littles love “Facing the Giants” – will littles like “Fireproof?” Thanks!

I have not seen Facing the Giants, but I posted a little more on the themes and whether I would let the Littles see it right after we saw the movie: We Saw FIREPROOF!! http://jacquedixon.com/?p=1154

There are a few issues I would caution you against letting them see. We let Eric see it, but not Hannah. Not sure when she will. Being 11 and handling the responsibility he does around here as a young man, we felt we have prepared him to handle several of the issues; not sure about when Hannah will see it though.
You and Matt should go see it together “alone” first!

  6. Our whole family had been looking forward to seeing Fireproof for a long time since we’re all fans of Kirk Cameron. The opening day, September 26, just happened to be the day after our 20th wedding anniversary. We attended a Fireproof matinee on the first day it was released. What a great anniversary present! We and our three boys – ages 18, 13, and 8 – all loved the movie. You can read my lengthy review at http://www.knowledgehouse.info/review_fireproof.html

Welcome

Hello friends and welcome! The coffee is fresh, the tea is hot, so pull up a comfy chair and sit with me for a bit.

Who am I? Nobody special; just a flawed wife and mom, daughter, sister, and friend chosen by Yahveh to follow and tell about him.

Jacque Mrs. Jacque Dixon and her husband, Matt, train their nine children up in Yahveh's narrow way, home schooling on their small homestead in Indiana. She is co-owner and Manager of Gleaning the Harvest, a mission founded by the Dixons, presenting widowed/single mother home school families to Yahweh's people. She is also owner and publisher of Training Sons to Be Men, and Training Daughters, Teaching Wives. Walking Therein is where Jacque writes encouraging home school articles, articles of faith, and the daily lives of the Dixon family.
