Robin posted an excellent post on dehydration. I have passed out a few times in my life. One in particular stands out, but I don’t think it was a dehydration issue. It was an extremely warm day in which I ran outside in the midst of an emergency, holding a baby kitty that had been stepped on. I think I was in my first trimester, and I remember starting to feel dizzy and handing the kitty to one of our children as I slowly dropped to the sidewalk, laying down before I passed out. I can still remember the feeling of euphoria and lack of control.

Robin felt the same dizziness and lack of control, accompanied by nausea, but hers was dehydration. As she points out, it can be a very serious thing! Dehydration: As Serious as a Heart Attack

Personal Bible Study time:

Older children: They do this on their own. I usually ask them if they got to read their Bible and what they are reading in.
Middlers: Same thing, though it is more of a reminder. I try to discuss it with them a bit.
Littles: That is my responsibility to read to them each morning and/or to sing a song with them, pray with them -whatever fits into the morning time schedule. The other older children also do this.
Obviously, videos are great for this, as long as it is not a babysitter, and I am present to discuss things or listen to what they may say or talk about with each other and ask or discuss.

Torah Readings:

Torah Readings consist of a reading from the Torah, the Prophets, the Wisdom Books, and the New Testament. This will probably happen on Saturday or Sunday, whenever Daddy has time that weekend. We will do it as a family. You will find the list of Torah readings at Torah Portions.org.

Consider His Ways: Just Think About It Devotionals by Kyle Humphrey

These will be used with the older children weekly for discussion and edification. We had the privilege of meeting the Humphrey family and sharing a Shabbat with them. What a blessing! You can also subscribe to the devotionals at Consider His Ways.

Doorposts Studies:

These are individual studies that will be used for weekly study.

Littles and Middles:
For Instruction In Righteousness: This is a topical study to be used as occasions arise and will also be used as discussion.
Plants Grown Up and Polished Cornerstones: character-building/training studies to be used at the pace of the individual child or schedule. This is for a large age-span also. You use whatever projects fit the age of your child and then can go back after they are older to each chapter and move on to the next, more mature projects.

For This Is Right: A Practical Application of the Fifth Commandment for Young People
Honor Your Father and Mother: The Fifth Commandment for Little Ones

As Unto The Lord: This one is for me. This will also be good study for the older daughters, ages 15 – 19. Obviously, some chapters or topics of marriage may need to be skipped.

We will continue on our studies of the Biblical Holy Days, using Heart of Wisdom’s A Family Guide to the Biblical Feasts by Robin Sampson and Linda Pierce, and also the Grapevine Studies: Biblical Feasts and Holy Days.

Blogging:

The oldest 5 girls and Eric all have personal blogs where they write and express their faith and interact, taking on comments and challenges of being explanatory in their writings. We also have acquired a couple of other sites this year, including a Bible Study one, which is where we are recording and discussing our walk in Torah, and another for Betrothal and Courtship studies.

Recommendations:

Devotional, Study book Recommendations:
After Bible study, there are some other books that we will be using to grow in our faith and life.

Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus by Ann Spangler, Lois Tverberg
Are You Really on the Right Path? by Kyle Humphrey
Boundary Stones study by Aaron Eby

Restoration: Returning the Torah of God to the disciples of Jesus by D. Thomas Lancaster
The Excellent Wife by Martha Peace
Created to Be His Help Meet by Debi Pearl

Magazine Recommendations:

Above Rubies Magazine
Home School Digest
Home School Enrichment

Recommendations for Bible Movies for Children:
Please preview all videos and do not go on our recommendation alone.

Nest videos:

I like the older ones. There are still some issues we have with the Bible not being accurately represented in some of the stories. You just have to know the story and make sure you are correcting it as they watch it. It is also good to get out the Bible – not a children’s Bible story book either – and read the actual story to your children and talk about what was different in the movie. You will be surprised at what they remember each time they watch it that you read and discussed from the WORD.

Some faves are:
Samuel
Daniel
Saul of Tarsus
The Journeys of Paul
A King is Born
David
The Passion series
Esther

Little Golden Books trilogy: Noah, Jonah, and David and Goliath: This is old. Had it for over 15 years.
The Miracle Maker
David
The Ten Commandments
Pilgrim’s Progress

Videos for our older children with a Biblical message are:

Jesus
The Passion
Amazing Grace
Flywheel
Fireproof
Apocalypse
Revelation
Tribulation
Judgment

We will be starting our ‘class time’ and schedule for school in September. We always start the day following Labor Day as our “official day”. I will be posting more of our plans and resources in the weeks to come.

I ran Mom into town today to the Salon and went on to WalMart to get some things for the special dish for Matt tonight: Frito Pie (story and recipe to come). Some of my favorite people went with me, and we had a great time! Jocelyn, Eric, Hannah, Caleb, and LucyLillie and I looked at knitting needles, yarn, bed sheets and then got all we needed for Daddy’s Frito Pie. Hannah was pleased to pay for her own needles and yarn and buy some for Eric with money from her birthday. She was beaming. I love living learning.

When I got home, I realized it was Monday…. MY Memo Monday at The HSBA Post. What I really wanted to do was post the memo there that Jocelyn made for when she forgot to get the Homeschool Memoirs done a couple of weeks ago. Instead, I am going to post a couple of wish lists I made out for our home school books last night. Seems to be a lot of that going around here lately. Funny how we still get all the things done we need to, even if it is a bit late. Work’s done, school’s done, and no one is starving. Life happens.

Lamplighter Books

We have some gift certificates for The Old Schoolhouse Store, so I was looking for the Pilgrim’s Progress Curriculum set last month, and I found out they don’t have it. So, I was looking at the Lamplighter books, and I made a pretty good list. I will give you the name and the price. If you want to see the descriptions, go to the Lamplighter category at TOStore.

*Mothers of Famous Men – Lamplighter $18
*Mary Jones and Her Bible – Lamplighter $17
*Little Threads – Lamplighter $17
*Stepping Heavenward – Lamplighter $20
*What Is Her Name? – Lamplighter $17
*The Duties of Parents – Lamplighter $7
*The Three Weavers – Lamplighter $13
*The Stranger At Home – Lamplighter $14
*Tom Gillies – Lamplighter $18
*Tomorrow – Lamplighter $16
*Children of Cloverley – Lamplighter $18
*Teddy’s Button – Lamplighter $17
Christie’s Old Organ – Lamplighter $16
Christie, the King’s Servant – Lamplighter $16
The White Knights – Lamplighter $18
The Lost Ruby – Lamplighter $14

The ones marked are the ones I definitely want. We have a copy of Christie’s Old Organ and Christie the King’s Servant, so I moved those to he bottom. I tried to pick out a good balance of girls’ interests and boys’, and mom’s – like the one on procrastination (Tomorrow).

While I am listing books, here are the book suggestions I gave a friend on Twitter last week. Sisterlisa asked me if I was going to post them somewhere, so, here it is (they’ll be on my blog too). Several of them are Lamplighters, too, that we have read for the Book Club:

Books for Boys/girls: The Inheritance, The Hedge of Thorns, Heroes for God, Explorers For God, the Kingdom Series, the Little house books

Books for young men/boys: Titus Comrade of the Cross, Enoch Roden’s Training, Boys of Grit, Tiger&Tom/Other Stories, Christie’s Old Organ

More books for young daughters: Anne of Green Gables, ,Rosa of Linden Castle, Little Faith, Christie’s Old Organ, The King’s Daughter/Other Stories, Daughters of Destiny, Hero Tales, Helen’s Temper, the Hedge of Thorns

HOW Wisdom Internet-linked Unit Study

The second wish list I made out is what I need for the HOW Wisdom Unit Study. I made a CHECKLIST and Planning Sheet so I can check off each unit and the steps in the HOW Teaching Approach. It’s a short list, but fortunately, I found some other awesome resources I need for our children. Our children, not me, I tell you. These are the resources I am looking for, and the grades they are needed for:

K-3
[ ] Wisdom and the Millers by Mildred A. Martin

4-8
[X] In His Steps by Charles M. Sheldon
[ ] Noah Webster’s Advice to the Young by Noah Webster
[X] The Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan
[ ] Walking Wisely: Real Guidance for Life’s Journey by Charles Stanley

9-12
[X] In His Steps by Charles M. Sheldon
[ ] Noah Webster’s Advice to the Young by Noah Webster
[X] The Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan
[ ] Our Father Abraham: Jewish Roots of the Christian Faith by Marvin R. Wilson
[ ] Walking Wisely: Real Guidance for Life’s Journey by Charles Stanley

I would love a nice copy of The Pilgrim’s Progress, but for now, we can rent them two at a time from the library. We already have the books with the X on them. I am going to check and see if any of the rest are at the local library, though I think it would be better to get our own copies for the fifteen-unit study. I have an account at the HOW store, and I love that I can keep a wish list. I can email one to myself too, which is a great help to just grab it out of my email, instead of going to the site and logging in.

If you are interested in learning about the Purpose of Sabbath, as we are, or any of the Jewish Holidays, Robin has many different sites to help you out. I was on her Biblical Holidays site just last night looking.

**JUST got this tweet from Robin:

“Homeschool Book Sale limited offer up to 60% off http://is.gd/8qBS“

I have learned in my heart a lot about Jewish culture and tradition since we have started studying Hebrew and my friends have encouraged me in finding out about the Jewish Holidays. What got off to a slow start a couple of years ago has been jump-started by God in our home in the past few months. Yesterday Jocelyn found an article about the Jewish Wedding Ceremony and read parts of it to me. It is so beautiful and prophetic. It is as if the culmination of Jewish life before marriage was building up to the marriage ceremony. The celebration each year of Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, being the remembrance of the dedication of the Temple after it had been desecrated, comes full circle as a part of the Wedding ceremony. The ‘groom’ – chatan is to break the glass to remember the destruction of the Temple at Jerusalem, and it just opened my eyes to all God gave His People in His every command, covenant, and tradition.

Robin had told Jocelyn a few months ago that contrary to what we know, Jewish men treat their women in high regards, and this so touched my heart:

Ketubah (Marriage Contract)
“Now comes the reading of the ketubah (marriage contract) in the original Aramaic text. The ketubah outlines the chatan’s various responsibilities — to provide his wife with food, shelter and clothing, and to be attentive to her emotional needs. Protecting the rights of a Jewish wife is so important that the marriage may not be solemnized until the contract has been completed.
The document is signed by two witnesses, and has the standing of a legally binding agreement. The ketubah is the property of the kallah and she must have access to it throughout their marriage. It is often written amidst beautiful artwork, to be framed and displayed in the home.”

We in the US have no understanding of such things. We really don’t. For all of our talk of respect and equality, we have no idea. GOD Himself set up marriage and the relationship between a man and wife. This is just precious to me.

Jeremiah 17
“12A glorious high throne from the beginning is the place of our sanctuary. 13O LORD, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed, and they that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living waters. 14Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise. 15Behold, they say unto me, Where is the word of the LORD? let it come now.“

The LORD set things up in His WORD and within His People’s lives that were so intricate and intertwined with Who He is and what He wants us to remember and live by. It is a truly beautiful thing, and I can feel myself being drawn to the beauty and peace of the Scriptures as I learn more about it. We serve a very loving and merciful God. He has written everything for us to know in His WORD. It is all in there, we just need to search it as a treasure we are desperate to find. It is not hidden so much as it is awaiting to be revealed to us.

So, how much more fitting than to praise the LORD Jehovah with a Jewish Praise song on Saturday Psalm & Praise?

This is the praise, and though the translation lies within the song, I went ahead and translated the Hebrew parts of it on a translator below.

BARUCH HA SHEM [ADONAI]

(Bless the Name of the Lord)

Baruch, Baruch Ha Shem, Baruch Ha Shem Adonai, Adonai Yeshua ha Maschiach,
Hallelujah, hallelujah, Yeshua ha Maschiach, Yeshua hu Adonai!
Toda, toda, toda raba! Toda raba, Abba!
Bless, Bless the Name, Bless the Name of the Lord, the Lord Yeshua the Messiah,
Hallelujah, hallelujah, Yeshua the Messiah, Yeshua is the Lord!
Thank You, thank You, thank You so much! Thank You so much, Father!
Baruch, Baruch Ha Shem, Baruch Ha Shem Adonai, Adonai Yeshua ha Maschiach,
Hallelujah, hallelujah, Yeshua ha Maschiach, Yeshua hu Adonai!
Hallelujah, hallelujah, Yeshua the Messiah, Yeshua is the Lord!
Hallelujah, hallelujah, Yeshua ha Maschiach, Yeshua hu Adonai!

A friend of mine used to sing the Maranatha version of this song in church occasionally. I have always liked it, but I couldn’t find the lyrics to it.

Here is the translation of the Hebrew:

Hallelujah, hallelujah, Yeshua ha Maschiach, Yeshua hu Adonai! Baruch, Baruch Ha Shem, Baruch Ha Shem Adonai, Adonai Yeshua ha Maschiach, Hallelujah, hallelujah, Yeshua ha Maschiach, Yeshua hu Adonai! Toda, toda, toda raba! Toda raba, Abba!

Bless, Bless the Name, Bless the Name of the Lord, the Lord Yeshua the Messiah, Hallelujah, hallelujah, Yeshua the Messiah, Yeshua is the Lord! Thank You, thank You, thank You so much! Thank You so much, Father!

I hope you have a wonderful day today. I had the opportunity to read about Shabbat last night, and it is just more confirmation of God and His holiness and love and just Him coming down through the years in the commanded Jewish Feasts and Holy Days. I read the commandment for the Sabbath a few days ago and noticed that God referenced the Creation as a reason for a day of rest. It was interesting to find information about how that relates to the Shabbat -that it is a rest from our own creating and relying upon ourselves and to focus on our God, our Creator, without Whom we can do nothing.

Good Sabbath!

blessings,
