“Hear Thou from Thy dwelling place, even from Heaven; and when Thou hearest, forgive.”

~ Solomon’s prayer at the dedication of the Temple.

Oh Lord, how we need you. Even Solomon saw that men needed God. I pray that is our prayer for mankind. Lord, hear us, even from heaven, and when you hear our cries, please forgive us! Heal us and forgive our brokenness.

When the Weary, Seeking Rest

When the weary, seeking rest,
To Thy goodness flee;
When the heavy laden cast
All their load on Thee;
When the troubled, seeking peace,
On Thy Name shall call;
When the sinner, seeking life,
At Thy feet shall fall

Hear then in love, O Lord, the cry
In Heav’n, Thy dwelling place on high.

When the child, with grave fresh lip,
Youth, or maiden fair,
When the agèd, weak and grey,
Seek Thy face in prayer;
When the widow weeps to Thee,
Sad and lone and low;
When the orphan brings to Thee
All his orphan woe:

Hear then in love, O Lord, the cry
In Heav’n, Thy dwelling place on high.

When the stranger asks a home,
All his toils to end;
When the hungry craveth food,
And the poor a friend;
When the sailor on the wave
Bows the fervent knee;
When the soldier on the field
Lifts his heart to Thee:

Hear then in love, O Lord, the cry
In Heav’n, Thy dwelling place on high.

When the man of toil and care,
In the city crowd,
When the shepherd on the moor,
Names the Name of God;
When the learnèd and the high
Tired of earthly fame,
Upon higher joys intent,
Name the blessèd Name:

Hear then in love, O Lord, the cry
In Heav’n, Thy dwelling place on high.

When the worldling, sick at heart,
Lifts his soul above;
When the prodigal looks back
To his Father’s love;
When the proud man, in his pride,
Stoops to seek Thy face;
When the burdened brings his guilt
To Thy throne of grace:

Hear then in love, O Lord, the cry
In Heav’n, Thy dwelling place on high.

Buried: Canongate churchyard.

This hymn my father liked, as he often told me, as well as any he had ever written; for though he saw flaws in the poetry, the subject and working out and whole tone of it seemed to him far better than many other of his pieces which had attained greater popularity’ (Hymns of Horatius Bonar, p. xxii.). It was Bishop Fraser of Manchester’s favourite hymn.

“For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness;

but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.”

When I read the accompanying scripture I had saved with it on a word document, I just knew it was today’s post. “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness.” And “The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.” Psalm 14:1

The fool hath said… I certainly do not want that written about me. I don’t want the word fool used in the same sentence! There are so many things we are fooled by, though, even as Believers. Oh Lord, help me to walk in your ways. Help me to search out your old paths and look and walk therein. Show me, Lord. Open my eyes, give me a willing heart to receive your word, that I might not be fooled!

I pray for courage to cling to you, Lord, to the Old Rugged Cross. Some folks say it is a crutch. I say it is a beacon in the darkness of a failing and hopeless world. Thank you for the cross, Jesus. Thank you for the cross for my children and my family and my friends. Thank you for the cross for the stranger, the homeless, the mom, the dad. Thank you for the cross for all.

The Old Rugged Cross

Words and music by George Bennard – 1913

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,

The emblem of suffering and shame;

And I love that old cross where the dearest and best

For a world of lost sinners was slain.

*

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,

Till my trophies at last I lay down;

I will cling to the old rugged cross,

And exchange it some day for a crown.

*

O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,

Has a wondrous attraction for me;

For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above

To bear it to dark Calvary.

*

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,

Till my trophies at last I lay down;

I will cling to the old rugged cross,

And exchange it some day for a crown.

*

In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,

A wondrous beauty I see,

For ’twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,

To pardon and sanctify me.

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,

Till my trophies at last I lay down;

I will cling to the old rugged cross,

And exchange it some day for a crown.

*

To the old rugged cross I will ever be true;

Its shame and reproach gladly bear;

Then He’ll call me some day to my home far away,

Where His glory forever I’ll share.

*

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,

Till my trophies at last I lay down;

I will cling to the old rugged cross,

And exchange it some day for a crown.

What do you cherish? Do you cherish your beloved? Your children? Your job, your car, your friends? What do you cherish?

cher·ish

to hold or treat as dear; feel love for

to care for tenderly; nurture

to cling fondly or inveterately to

Can you believe the third meaning of the word “cherish”? “to cling fondly or inveterately to.” Wow.

Do you cherish your Lord? Do you cherish the One True God and His Son, Jesus?

Do you cherish The Old Rugged Cross?

blessings,

Food Crisis Spreads Across the Globe. Rice Shortage Triggers 50% Increase in Two Weeks - April 6, 2008 – Rising food prices has transformed food into an international political issue. Riots have erupted in Egypt, Haiti and Bangladesh over soaring food prices. People fought one another over bags of rice in West Africa.
