So, we are eating an orange, and Hannah, 10, asks me, “Mom, how did Adam peel his orange?”.

Almost not quite sure what to respond, I say, “Um, with his fingers?”.

“With his fingers?”

“Yes.”

She picks up a piece of cut orange peel, and says, “I mean this hard peel. He peeled this with his fingers?” in disbelief.

How could I have been so remiss in my educating my daughter in the school of life? What could I do to fix this lack of understanding of reality?

What else?

I got an orange and peeled it with my fingers to prove that this was no great feat. Not something I expected to ever be a Living Learning Moment, but, hey, I guess I was either spoiled or really deprived as a child.

Apparently, having the use of a Pampered Chef Citrus Peeler or using a sharp knife to cut it up has left a huge hole in her understanding of civilization before these handy little gadgets.

Go figure.

Speaking of some handy little gadgets: This is a very handy thing, and not little at all! I am trying to win an ERGObaby Organic Carrier and Heart2Heart Infant Insert @TheShoppingMama. As usual, don’t feel obligated to go enter, as I would love to have a better chance! Just kidding! This one sure is a beauty tho!

All of a sudden school officially started, the leaves started turning orange and red, and the temperatures dropped too cold for and Indiana Fall. I surely don’t know how time flies by us so quickly, but I am already longing for warmer temps!

Thankfully, we are expecting some warmer temps this week… just a bit warmer. That is good for us, because we are in the middle of building a Sukkah outside in celebration of the Feast of Sukkot. We are using the Sukkah and all the information surrounding the Feast to home school by what I call Living Learning Moments. Living Learning Moments is just my name for hands-on life-learning. That’s how we home school.

HOW Do You Home School?

Cristina makes a good point when she asks, “When will we learn that less can also be more?” about her article, More than Enough? posted at Home Spun Juggling.

The Teacher here – yours truly, uses a lot of hands-on things to learn from, like building the Sukkah, researching online, and posting things on the blogs for writing and history, etc… What do you have For the Teacher:

My friend, Belinda Letchford, wants to know about your deadlines and plans for 2009. The giveaway ends Friday, October 9th, so be sure to get over and enter.

Janine reminds California Homeschoolers that It’s that time of year again: time to submit their private school affidavits!
We don’t do a whole lot in our home school until our Littles are bigger. I have never been good at “lessons” for our pre-school children. I don’t mind, because we do so many other things, but What do you do for your Pre-Schoolers:

Rachel M shares their latest home school-preschool lesson, adapted from something she did in high school when she was home schooled. She also thinks it is adaptable with some effort for older grades. Playing with Sponges: 5 Ways posted at quirkymomma.com.

Tristan has a great day plan for moms who home school with Pre-schoolers and Littles!
One thing I am going to be writing up is the idea my friend Michelle from Steadfast at Home gave me to make mini Sukkahs out of cookies with frosting and eat them! Sounds messy, contemplative and, well, it involves food! But I know the Littles – and the Middlers – will have a blast! How can you go wrong there? Sorry, this one has not yet been written, but I thought I’d throw that idea out. You’ll have to watch for it in the near future!

We use Living Learning Moments for so many of our subjects, but one subject we eventually have to use the old textbooks for is Math Fun

I am one home school teacher who loves to research things on my own and learn as much as our children do. I suppose you might call that Studying:

Lara DeHaven presents all she has learned about Honeybees and what is happening to our world because of it. Great info for your bee-interested student! You will find her at Texas Homesteader.

Book reviews of a couple of books we have read as of late. Amy @ Hope Is the Word presents Read Aloud Thursday::The Helen Keller Edition posted at Hope Is the Word.

Miss Amanda, our almost-20 year-old, shares how we learned about firefighters and her article she wrote for an online magazine in Courage Under Fire posted at The Daily Planet.

A topic I love to learn about and teach to our children, but I have found I would rather stay away from in open discussion for the most part – at least on blogs: Politics

Alasandra of Alasandra’s Homeschool Blog wants to know what the problem is with Conservatives who are up in arms about school children singing a song about President Obama. Heheh… I have no comment. Of course, she also mentioned the praise song to Bush and FEMA, which I would be up in arms about. She presents Songs About Presidents.

As you can tell, a huge part of our learning involves the Bible and its many facets we can apply to our lives. We have learned so much in the past year, and I am thankful we have grown in our Faith:

Michelle @ Delightful Learning presents Prepare and Pray Lesson 15: Preparation for Perilous Times, a family preparedness study based off the book Swiss Family Robinson, by Johann Wyss, posted at Delightful Learning.

Kathy presents her review of Apologia’s Who is God and How Can I Really Know Him: Homeschool Review posted at Homeschoolbuzz.com Reviews.

Of course, there are the usual topics that well-meaning people present to home schoolers each year (and every year, regardless of how many times it has been adequately addressed…) The good thing is that the longer you teach and the more you experience about home schooling, the less you let the little things bother you, like most common Home School Issues

Barbara Frank writes about how home schoolers regularly demonstrate that children don’t need more time in school in her post, Do Kids Need More Time in School? at Barbara Frank Online.

Janet presents The Big Question: What about socialization? posted at Homeschooler Cafe’.

Dave Miller presents Why Taking Classes is a Lousy Way to Learn posted at The Homeschooling Physicist. I discuss, based on our experience homeschooling and trying a traditional class in Chinese, why taking traditional classes is a poor way to learn.

Katherine of asks, “To whom do children belong?” when a public school in Florida mandates how students get to their building. No biking or walking allowed. Posted at No fighting, no biting!.

After all, we don’t want any naysayers to come in and interfere with the real learning going on and stretching our children’s minds and Creativity:

A favourite topic of discussion for me is health, Home Remedies, and products that have enhanced our lives. Several of these products we have enjoyed and learned about the many health benefits come from Tropical Traditions. The main product of theirs we use is their Virgin Coconut Oil. We not only love the taste of it, but the benefits are many, from topical applications to eating it cooked in foods to eating it raw added to foods or by the spoonful in my coffee. It is wonderful! And, it actually smells like and tastes like Coconut, not some watered-down flavor-added product. That was the first hook… the actual smell of it.

Some of their other products we have used include:

Organic Raw Honey

Organic Coconut Flour

Organic Lip Moisturizers

Organic Moisturizing Lotions

The girls have reviewed their VCO, and they received the book, Virgin Coconut Oil, which is a wonderful resource for all the health benefits of VCO, and other information about health. It is very informative and interesting to learn these things – right up my alley!

Personally, I LOVE the Raw Honey. It is like eating candy, believe it or not. I haven’t tasted anything like it. I LOVE the VCO, and I swear by its many healing properties.

Some of the products I REALLY want to try, for their health benefits are:

Organic Coconut Cream Concentrate

Antioxidant Omega 3 Greens

Organic Teeth Cleaners

I was surprised that they also have these products (and many more that will surprise you):

Organic Teas

Organic Soaps

Organic Whole Grains

The Cream Concentrate and the Omega 3 Greens are on sale at TT just until today, but, I want to let you know that you have a chance to win your own Organic Raw Honey at Prissy Green. If you would question the importance of how Tropical Traditions is the top of the line Organic Honey, you may want to know this:

Tropical Traditions Organic Raw Honey comes from the frontier areas of Canada, and is only harvested during a 6-week period in the summer. Tropical Traditions is the exclusive source of this premium organic honey in the U.S. Most commercial honeys available on the market today come from bee farms, where the bees are controlled within a certain area and get their pollen from usually only one kind of flower. Many of the plants that produce these flowers (clover, orange blossom, etc.) are grown with pesticides and fertilizers as well. In addition, almost all honeys on the market are pasteurized in high heat and filtered, removing many of the beneficial nutrients and enzymes.

Tropical Traditions Organic Raw Honey has not been subjected to the heat of processing, only warmed enough to flow (same temperatures the honey would see inside the hive). We select only premium honey that is pure, smooth and creamy, with the consistency of soft margarine at harvest. It contains live yeast and enzymes, because it has not been processed. It also contains pollen because it has not been filtered—merely screened.

Head over to Prissy Green: Raw Honey Review and Giveaway to enter the giveaway. She has several ways to win, and while I am sure hoping she picks MY number, I wish you the best in the giveaway! Giveaway ends Sept. 23rd.

blessings~
